Tesla

Tesla, Inc. is an American electric vehicle and clean energy company. Tesla's current products include electric cars, battery energy storage from home to grid-scale, solar panels, and solar roof tiles. Founded in July 2003 as Tesla Motors, the company's name is a tribute to inventor and electrical engineer Nikola Tesla. Elon Musk, who contributed most of the funding in the early days, has served as CEO since 2008. According to Musk, the purpose of Tesla is to help expedite the move to sustainable transport and energy, obtained through electric vehicles and solar power. Check out Tesla share live chart!

Tesla’s Model S Plaid is one of the few mass-produced electric vehicles that can speed up from 0 to 60 mph in less than two seconds (it is 1.98 sec actually). Also, Tesla’s famous “Supercharger” charging stations can power up the car for another 200 miles in mere 15 minutes.

What drives the TESLA stock price?

The most recent Tesla earnings report showed an eye-popping $1.14 billion in net income in the second quarter, results that blew past analyst expectations. Also, Tesla reported revenue of $11.96 billion, a nearly 100% increase from the $6.04 billion it generated in the second quarter of 2020. The results pushed shares up more than 2.2% in after-hours trading.

Tesla has a market share of the global passenger vehicle market of about 1%. It’s just a small automaker. But Tesla’s market cap ($707 billion) is now about equal to the combined market cap ($582 billion) of Toyota (Toyota and Lexus), Volkswagen (VW, Audi, Porsche, and many other brands), Daimler, GM, BMW, Honda, and Ford – an amazing, but little bit terrifying sight.

Thousands of bearish traders have lost their money trying to short Tesla. Tesla short-sellers saw $38 billion in mark-to-market losses throughout 2020. Many famous investors, like Michael Burry (the guy who predicted the 2008 crisis) think that Tesla is overbought and needs to plunge significantly.

In February Tesla bought $1.5 billion in bitcoin and started to accept it as a payment for the next several months, so at some point, Tesla stock price may try to align with bitcoin volatile movements. In June, Tesla once again significantly increased its EV (electric vehicles) sales in China, reaching one of the highest levels ever. Over 33,000 Model 3 and Model Y were sold in China or exported. Also, Tesla’s price is dependent on green energy and self-driving legislation. All those factors combined with earnings report provides Tesla’s massive price movements.
